Envisioning a sustainable Hong Kong in 2019, different prototype ideas were developed by the participants during our first Collaboratory event -“Towards a sustainable Hong Kong” on 6 Sept 2014, two of which especially focused on the tourist economy and human resource issues:
1) To develop a wide range of diversified tourist attractions and promote eco-tourism
Hong Kong tourism industry has been rapidly growing in recent years and has become one of the major economy of the city. To further diversify Hong Kong’s tourist attractions, it is suggested to develop new scenic spots inside and outside of the city, such as Ferris wheel in Central and organic farm in the suburb areas. Besides being visited as a shopping paradise, Hong Kong is also famous for its species richness in its country parks, which will make it a great idea to promote hiking programs in the parks – providing visitors an alternative experience of Hong Kong through appreciation of its wildlife biodiversity is exactly what eco-tourism should do.
2) To introduce non-traditional subjects in the secondary school curriculum for talent development optimization
It's said Hong Kong thrives because of its talented citizens – this is still the case right now. Education itself is a kind of science, and “teaching students according to their aptitude” is the most important matter. That’s why it’s suggested to set up vocational training schools and offer more non-traditional professional training courses like glass blowing, city walk tour guide, etc. On the other hand, the concept of life planning should be introduced to secondary school students to broaden their horizon, as an early career plan will help them make the most use of their talent. No matter what boost the economy, talents are always the foundation.
