If you are familiar with eSports, you may have heard of Hong Kong Esports Limited – the first and largest eSports search engine for games in social media in Asia. Being the CEO of the organization, Mr. Derek Cheung shared with us his experience of being a young entrepreneur in a short interview recorded as below.
Which two characteristics do you think are the most important for an entrepreneur?
First, passion. It not only enables you to materialize all your innovative, well-acclaimed ideas, but also enables you to be adventurous, to overcome the fear of venturing into the unknown, to be committed to taking challenges ahead and facing possible failures.
The other one I’d like to mention is a lucid mind. Think concretely to visualize not only your goals, but also every step leading to it. Oscar Wilde once said, "we are all in the gutter, but some of us are looking at the stars." However, you should know how to reach the stars other than only look at them – this is the crucial difference between a dreamer and an entrepreneur.
Is there anything that HK youngsters should keep in mind when they are trying to achieve their goals?
Always remember to critically compare and evaluate different proposals and plans while absorbing the merits of each and being able to come up with an optimal plan. At the same time, listen to criticisms. Criticism from different sources would help to reflect on areas for improvement.
What about external help? Can employees help us to go further?
We should allow employees to reach their fullest potential.Try to understand each employee's potential, strengths and weaknesses and to place them in the right positions or delegate them to the right tasks, which would give them chances to excel on their job. In turn, the employees will find their self-worth in the company and gradually fosters a sense of belonging towards the company.
How do the current environment and existing systems in HK benefit the running and expanding of your business?
First of all, people in Hong Kong are able to access the Internet with adorable speed and stability, both of which are the most important factors that contribute to the flourishing of eSports industry here. This brings plenty of opportunities to boost the popularity and prevalence of eSports. Secondly, IT education in our education system provides adequate IT talents. Many tertiary education institutions offer various IT-related programmes and majors. To gather a team of passionate and competent experts is not a difficult mission.
