On 27 Sept 2014, HKSS visited the Gubelin Academy to learn the beauty of coloured gemstones and the liveliness of jewelry market of Hong Kong.

HKSS guests learned the knowledge of how to understand and appreciate colored gems.

The visit began with the comprehensive presentation by Miss Yvonne Chu, trainer of Gubelin Academy. A 4C model was introduced to better know how to appreciate the beauty of gemstones – clarity, cut, color and carat weight. It’s from Miss Chu’s speech that we learned not only the size of the jewelry matters, but its shape, craft and quality are also important factors. Gubelin Academy was opened by Gubelin in 2013 in Hong Kong to share Gubelin’s 160 year expertise in imparting passion and emotion in colored gemstones. It offers a series of modular programmes, which offer a fast-track training into the world of colored gems. In the tour of its salon following the presentation, guests of HKSS learned to understand and appreciate colored gems with a more informative and professional approach.

Guests shared their impression and views about the tour during the buffet lunch provided by Gubelin Academy.

Apart from a better understanding of the beauty of gems, we also learned more about the significance of jewelry industry of Hong Kong economy. Hong Kong has an important jewelry market. Its diamond-trading platform is even larger than New York and London. The free pot, free market, and non-tax environment… all of these attract overseas jewelry buyers to come to the city to trade. Not only jewelry shops, jewelry fairs and shows also take place in Hong Kong quite often, for example, Asia World Expo and Wan Chai Convention Centre Exhibitions. We believe there are efforts that can be done to lead the industry more eco-friendly, such as to ensure the jewelry source sustainable, and in turn make contribution to the sustainability of Hong Kong.
